ATTENTION GUESTHOUSES AND BNB’s: ANOTHER INCIDENT OF THEFT/BILKING REPORTED

To guesthouse and BnB operators: A family of six fraudulently booked and checked in (via sending two fake bank payment notifications) at a Guesthouse in Johannesburg. The family, who claim to be from Durban, collected up a bill of R16 650 at the establishment and left at 3:30am without settling the outstanding account. FRAUDULENT ACTIVITY HAS RE-EMERGED USING ALIAS ‘ROBERT GUMEDE’

You may remember a number of alerts we have sent in the past involving an individual who fraudulently uses the name ‘Robert Gumede’ (NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH well-known South African businessman). Alias ‘Mr Gumede’ books accommodation and then sends a fake Proof of Payment that exceeds the booked amount. He thereafter requests the over-balance to be paid back to him. We have received information that he is again approaching and pestering a number of guesthouses and BnBs. We request you to contact us at tebogo@tourismsafety.tbcsa.travel if he approaches you for a booking. Click here to see more about this alert from the TSI portal.
